Canada became a country in 1867. That same year, Ontario became a province. Canada's second largest province is home to 11 million people. Toronto is Ontario's largest city and its capital. Ontario is found north of the Great Lakes and west of Quebec.
Most of Ontario's population lives in an area called the Golden Horseshoe (click here to learn more about the Golden Horseshoe). This area is important because it has many industries (e.g. auto industry) and businesses (e.g. financial). The auto industry provides jobs for many Ontarians in this area. Many fruits and vegetables are produced here. Ontario also has a pulp and paper industry. Nickel, cobalt, salt, and magnesium are mined in northern Ontario. Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, is located in Ontario.
